Compliance and Regulatory

Listed Building Consent

Formal consent from the local planning authority required before making any material alterations to a listed building, including rooftop solar PV installations regardless of size or capacity.

Listed building consent (LBC) is required for solar PV installations on listed buildings in addition to any planning permission. Permitted development rights do not apply to listed buildings, so every rooftop installation requires a full LBC application demonstrating that the proposed works are reversible and do not harm the special architectural or historic interest of the building.

Applications for LBC for solar PV typically require structural engineering evidence confirming that fixing methods are appropriate, reversible, and do not cause damage to the historic fabric. Solar Surveys structural reports can be prepared in formats suitable for inclusion in LBC applications, addressing the specific structural and fixing considerations relevant to historic construction types.
