EPDM Roof

A single-ply synthetic rubber roofing membrane (ethylene propylene diene monomer) used on flat commercial roofs, valued for durability, flexibility at low temperatures, and long service life.

EPDM membranes are a common flat roofing material on UK commercial buildings, particularly in older stock. EPDM is compatible with ballasted solar mounting systems, avoiding the need for penetrations, but the structural deck must be verified to carry the additional ballast weight per square metre. Mechanical attachment systems are also used with EPDM but require careful sealing to maintain the waterproof envelope.

Drone roof condition assessments can identify EPDM membrane defects including blistering, splits, and failed lap seams that may be invisible from ground level. Addressing membrane condition issues prior to PV installation avoids costly removal and reinstallation of the array if roof remediation is subsequently required.
