CAA Operational Authorisation

Approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority required for certain drone operations outside the standard Open or Specific category parameters, including operations in controlled airspace.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulates all drone operations under the Air Navigation Order and the UK Drone Code. Most commercial drone surveys for solar PV roof inspections are conducted under the Specific category of UK UAS regulations, requiring either a standard scenario authorisation or a bespoke operational authorisation from the CAA. Operators must hold a GVC (General Visual Line of Sight Certificate) qualification as a minimum.

For operations in controlled airspace within 5 km of a licensed aerodrome, additional permissions are required from the relevant air traffic control authority. Solar Surveys conducts all required airspace checks and holds current CAA operational authorisation for commercial drone surveys. Full credentials documentation is provided to clients on request.
