Compliance and Regulatory

Building Regulations (Solar PV)

Statutory requirements under the Building Regulations 2010 that apply to solar PV installations, covering structural adequacy (Part A), fire safety (Part B), and electrical safety (Part P).

Building Regulations apply to solar PV installations in England and Wales regardless of whether planning permission is required. Part A (Structure) requires that the roof structure is adequate to carry the additional loads imposed by the array. Part B (Fire Safety) addresses fire spread risk and access for emergency services. Part P (Electrical Safety) requires that electrical installation work is carried out by a competent person or notified to the local authority.

Structural sign-off from Solar Surveys provides the engineering evidence required for Part A compliance under the Building Regulations. For commercial installations, local authority building control or an approved inspector verifies that all applicable Parts of the Regulations have been addressed before the installation is signed off. MCS certification provides an alternative compliance route for MCS-certified installers.
