Roof Types

Pitched Roof

A roof with a slope exceeding approximately 10 degrees, shedding rain and snow by gravity and typically using tile, slate, or profiled metal cladding over a structural rafter and purlin framework.

Pitched roofs are the standard form for commercial portal frame industrial buildings and domestic properties. For solar PV, pitched roofs simplify array orientation and self-cleaning but concentrate wind uplift at eaves and ridge regions. The pitch angle affects both snow accumulation patterns and wind pressure coefficients used in structural calculations.

Structural assessments for pitched roof PV installations examine the capacity of the existing purlin and rafter framework to carry combined permanent and variable actions. MIS 3002 V6.0 Section 5.9.6 defines the evidence required to demonstrate structural adequacy, including existing structural calculations, a Desktop Structural Roof Loading Report, or an on-site structural survey.
