Standards and Codes

Eurocode

The suite of European structural design standards (EN 1990 to EN 1999) adopted as British Standards, forming the mandatory basis for structural engineering design and assessment in the UK.

The Eurocodes replaced former British Standards (BS 5950, BS 6399, etc.) as the primary structural design codes in the UK. They cover all structural materials and actions, from the basis of structural design (EN 1990) through actions on structures (EN 1991) to material-specific codes for steel (EN 1993), concrete (EN 1992), and timber (EN 1995). All Solar Surveys structural calculations are carried out to the relevant Eurocode parts and UK National Annexes.

For solar PV pre-construction structural assessments, the most relevant Eurocode parts are EN 1990 (load combination rules), EN 1991-1-1 (dead and imposed loads), EN 1991-1-3 (snow loads), EN 1991-1-4 (wind loads), and EN 1993-1-1 and EN 1993-1-3 (steel member design). The UK National Annexes to each part define the nationally determined parameters applicable to UK sites.
