    QUESTIONS

Desktop structural roof loading reports, answered

Do I need a structural engineer to put solar panels on a commercial roof?

From 18 June 2026, MIS 3002 V6.0 makes structural sign-off part of MCS certification for solar PV. The standard requires a suitably competent person to confirm the existing roof can carry the array, the mounting, and the wind and snow loads. On a commercial roof, the Solar Surveys standard is that this competent person should be a qualified structural engineer, because the spans, the existing loadings, and the exposure put the judgement beyond an installer check.

    What is MIS 3002 V6.0?

MIS 3002 is the MCS installation standard for solar PV. Version 6.0 is in force from 18 June 2026 and brings structural confirmation of the roof into the certification process. A desktop structural roof loading report from Solar Surveys is built to support that requirement.

How much does a desktop structural roof loading report cost?

Residential reports start at £130. Commercial reports start at £150 per roof. Pricing is shown before you order, and you can pay by card or by bank transfer against a pro-forma invoice.

How long does the report take?

The delivery benchmark is within 48 hours from confirmed scope. Once your roof details are confirmed, the report is assessed and signed by a qualified structural engineer.

Do you need to visit the site?

The desktop report is prepared from the information and documents you supply, with no site visit. Where a roof genuinely needs an on-site survey, for example visible distress, a mechanically fixed flat roof, or missing structural information, the report explains why, and an on-site structural survey can be arranged.

What standards is the report verified against?

Each report is verified against the Eurocodes, BS EN 1991-1-4 for wind with the UK National Annex and BS EN 1991-1-3 for snow, and BRE Digest 489 for PV uplift. It is compliant with MIS 3002 V6.0 and signed by a qualified structural engineer, independent of installers and the supply chain.
